IS YOUR FAITH PRACTICAL OR FANATICAL?

G.K. Chesterton is thought by many to have been one of the most gifted Christian writers of the twentieth century. He was once asked, ‘If you were trapped on an island, what book would you most want to have with you?’ The book he chose was not the Bible, it was called ‘Thomas’ Guide to Practical Ship-Building.’ Chesterton’s response reveals his sense of humour, and his sense of the practical. It also, I think, accurately portrays something of the nature of God himself. Many people think of the Christian God as someone who wants to give you exactly what you don’t need. He wants to tie up your life with all kinds of useless activities and obligations. Those people couldn’t be more wrong. Jesus taught that God is eager to give us what we need, what we ask for. Our God is a practical Person.

You don’t need to be afraid, said Jesus, that if you trust your future to God he will lead you off in a direction you hate. If you seek his will in some decision he won’t send you off in directions that frustrate you or create more problems than they solve. God is interested not just in the big issues of our lives, but in the small details. The small things add up to become big things, after all. If you were alone on a desert island, I think God would definitely want you to have the resources to build a boat!

Matthew 7:9-11 ‘Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!’ (NIV)

Prayer: ‘Father, thank you for your interest in every practical detail of my life. Please lead me to the right people, opportunities and resources today so that I can achieve something good and overcome the challenges thrown in my path.’

If our faith isnt practical it isnt useful. I dont think Jesus was born a carpenter just to be an “everyman” though of course that is part of it. I think there was infinite purpose in his own position in life as well as those of his closest disciples being carpenters and fishermen and tax collectors. There is a hands-on faith born in these men that stands the great tests of our time here on earth. A wisdom born in simplicity that great thinkers have always known. In the end we are all flattened out and challenged by what CS Lewis wrote as “The Problem of Pain”. Where is God? during such times takes us directly to the simplest challenge of all by Job’s wife “curse God and die”. Now either we do so in this, the most practical of times, or we quietly say in answer ” He gives and takes away. Blessed be the name of the Lord”. Pain is takes our faith to the most practical place of all and it is I think, the great sieve through which our life must pass. We all will stumble on it and in the end out response to pain will determine how practical our faith was and if there is any faith left at all.. and of course there can be. In pain Jesus’ last words were “FATHER.. into your hands I commit my spirit”

Well hello P. Anthony glad to have another blog of urs in front of me to explore my mind with… 🙂 Sooooo although i have never heard of this christian writer he sounds very ….intresting…and him choosing a book on how to build…. well… honestly im not suprised….i can see that and imagine it deeply…very wise and very smart of him dont u think?? LoL… id be saying the same thing lol…MAYBE.. HEHE… well…
him not picking the bible doesent suprise me .. i mean if he was one of the greatest CHRISTIAN writers of the 20th century….i think hes good… what i mean (all positive here pastor) is he knows what god reperesents in his life im sure… he knows god has planS for him… he knows god loves, cherishes and protects him through the dark, through thick and thin…and that god inspried him and is always by his side….i mean no disrespect to others if they choose to take the bible because every body has there own unqiue decisions… and i respect that… But regardless if he had his bible or not he knew god was with him through it all…im sure he had no worries what so ever….in his faith… so that way if he was trapped on an island he would of course wana find a way off of it wouldent he?? thats why he chose the book he chose…he already had faith, already had god, so with god and a wise book on how to build a boat… he was good to go if that would happen lol..

AT LEAST THATs WHY I THINK HE CHOSE THAT BOOK LOL!

Someonce can belive in god eather way they just gotta have faith, pray, spread his love, and let him in to your heart! 🙂 Keep him with you and u can never go wrong u can make it through anything.!! 🙂 God loves us no matter what….

God never wants to do us wrong….he may not give us everything we want, but he gives us everything we need…and most beautifully and importantly hes right there for us….even through the hardest times in ur life….

Anything god gives us is never useless he gives us everything for a reason… sometimes the smallest things he gives us are the most beautiful and most important… we just need to be more aware of natures and lifes beauty he created and is still working on …:-)

Its beautiful to try and guess everyday of our lives.. the mystery of why we are were we are, or were were going..or even why we grew up in the places we did… it may not always seem beautiful.. but its for a reason… and to see how we have all made it this far… God made sure even though we were were we were that he gave us the tools we needed to survive as hes still doing today… MY POINT…is dont ever feel god is bad because he doesent give u what u want when u want…hes everlasting….he shields this world… he shields everyone that he created with his own hands we just gotta belive in him…

But yes im sure god would want u to have the tools u need if u were stuck on any island lol!

All in all god never gives u anything u cant handle…hes by urside holding ur hand….ALWAYS

Gooooooood 1 P. Anthony!! LoL!! VERY INTRESTING REALLY MADE ME THINK WHAT I WOULD WANT IF I WAS STUCK IN A PLACE LIKE THAT LOL!! HAHA! BUT REALLY AS USUAL GREAT BLOG… PEACE, LOVE, AND HAPPINESS EVERYONE..and P.A.
