THE SMILEY GOD
2 Corinthians 5:19 (Amplified Bible): ‘[Christians preach a gospel that is about] reconciling and restoring the world to favour with God.’
What is it that Christians are called to preach to this world? Is it judgement to come? Or, hellfire? Not primarily, no. Our first message must always be this: ‘God loves you and he has given his best to reconcile you to himself. He wants you to live under his smile again!’ What is favour with God? It is knowing that he’s not angry with you any more; that you have passed from being his enemy, because of rebellion, to being his friend, through faith in Jesus. Being God’s friend does cause us some problems in this fallen world – some people will try to discourage our faith, or even to pull us down. And there are real spiritual forces with which we must contend and then overcome by faith. But being God’s friend carries great advantages. The advantages are seen in how he favours us. He openly and visibly showers blessing on our lives: on our families, our careers, our relationships, our ministries, our health, our finances and more. As we learn to believe for and live in God’s visible blessing, we proclaim by our very lives a gospel that is about people being restored to God’s favour.
Prayer: ‘Lord, help me to believe for and to accept your favour in my life today. Help me to show others, through my testimony that they too can live under your smile.’
