UNSTOPPABLE POWER TO BECOME WITNESSES

The Acts of the Apostles

Act 1 – Scene 2

Luke quickly moves on not giving his readers too much information, hardly any in fact, of what happened during the days between Jesus’ resurrection and his ascension. He will return as He went according to Luke (v11).

At the end of Jesus’ time with his disciples before he was to take his place at the right hand of God, his disciples asked if it now was the time that the kingdom comes to Israel. Was it that they were expecting that Jesus would kick the Romans out and establish political boundaries again as in the days of old? They didn’t quite get it, as we don’t sometimes get it! I explained in my previous post about the kingdom of God, it a spiritual reign in the hearts of people, where Jesus is Lord of our lives.

Jesus will establish His reign once and for all when he returns for his bride, the Church. This is not the place to discuss the finer points of eschatology (teaching about the end times). While at this point in time there are many who do not yet bow their knee to Jesus, one day all will and the fullness of His Kingdom will be manifest.

In this past year we have seen earthquakes in New Zealand, Revolutions in the Middle East & Tsunami in Japan just this spring. There are wars and rumours of war. In Matthew 24, Jesus spoke of the kind of things that will happen in the last days, maybe we are seeing these? These events should give us greater urgency to fulfil the great commission…

18 And Jesus came and said to them, ”All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Luke records in Acts 1:8 that Jesus told his disciples that they would receive power to witness through being filling by the Holy Spirit. Jesus commissioned His disciples to carry on His mission of the proclamation of the good news. So we do not do God’s work with out God’s provision, He has sent the Holy Spirit to empower us to continue that very same mission to our workplace, school, college, neighbourhood town, nation, continent, world. If you do not know what the good news of Jesus is, it will become clear over the next few weeks. Feel free to comment or contact me about any of these thoughts.

Thanks for reading… hopefully I’ll see you at Bethel Church this coming Sunday as we begin our summer series called “UNSTOPPABLE”.
